Practical Examinations

IMA practical examinations assess a student's ability to work professionally within industry standards and time constraints.

Assessment criteria may include:

  • Hygiene and sanitation procedures

  • Preparation and organisation

  • Technical application skills

  • Product knowledge

  • Creativity and suitability of the finished look

  • Overall professional presentation

Students must achieve the required pass standard to successfully complete their qualification.

Theory Examination

Students completing the IMA Make-up Application Certificate are required to undertake a theory examination designed to assess their understanding of professional practices, product knowledge, health and safety, and make-up application techniques.

Independent External Assessment

A key feature of IMA qualifications is independent external assessment.

Student portfolios, examination results, and supporting documentation are reviewed by an External Examiner who is independent of the training provider.

This process helps ensure:

  • Consistent standards across accredited schools

  • Fair and objective assessment

  • Industry credibility

  • Quality assurance for students and employers

Quality Assurance

The IMA works closely with accredited schools to maintain high standards of education and assessment.

Training providers are required to meet IMA accreditation standards and follow established guidelines relating to teaching quality, student support, health and safety, and professional practice.
